I've converted 2 cars from R12 to R134a. A 76 2002 and an 81 320i. Both still running cold. With the 2002 I didn't even pump out the old or change the dryer. Its still cold and runs fine and for $35 for convertion kit I'm very happy. Unless I suspected a leak I wouldn't change the compressor unless the compressor had clearly failed. If it fails as a result of running the new stuff and weird blend of oil then so be it. I still got free time on it. Why replace it in advance?

I did an 89 2 years ago, didnt even replace compressor and it is still pumping out cold air. Yes if you have a leak in the line etc, it will still be leaking. I have bought 3 rebuilt compressors for conversion at the local Autozone for 130-160 One was defective and they replaced it the next day , other than that all 3 are still running, the oldest going on 5 years. 160 beats 400

I think you have to buy a new compressor though for about $400 I have also heard that when you convert it that it will still leak after you do it.
