Converting is NOT that simple. If your compressor has been replaced lately, it is probably R-134a compatible, otherwise, it is not. Depending on the temperatures where you live, you may be happy with a R-134a conversion. Where I live, Austin, TX, you would NOT be happy converting to R-134a (I know, I have done it on an E28). The best solution for R-12 systems is to use RB-276 (Freezone). RB-276 is a blend that is 100% compatible with R-12, will NOT fractionate and can be topped-off indefinately. RB-276 has a temperature/pressure curve very similiar to R-12. It works very well and costs about $10.00/lb. Did I mention that it can be mixed with R-12 and uses mineral oil.
The air condioning on my '89 735IL just stopped working. I looked in the window on the a/c line and could see no refrigerant so I thought I needed a can of R-12. I went to the local auto store and was told the no longer can sell R-12 and the only a few stores do now for about $50.00 a can! They recomended I buy a R-134 retrofit charging kit that will switch you from R12 to 134. The kit had all the 134 adapters for the service heads, oil charge and a couple of cans of 134 plus the hose for the cans. The kit is about $50.00 and made by Interdynamics, INC. (model #RKR-5) I would like to know if any one has used this kit or one like it and is it ok in the long run.
Thanks, Dave
