Could be that it is barely opening. Your engine temp should not be that hot. At normal warm weather temps, you should be hovering right at the half way point, even with AC flowing.

A relatively low cost fix if that's it. If you have some time, you could always pull it and try the pot of boiling water test to see if it opens.
My newly purchased 750 is running in the 3/4 range on the guage, sometimes quite close to the red. Is this normal?
Also, it has a 200lb coolant cap. Coluld this be causing the problems?
There's no heat coming from the heater either, just cold to warm air.
