I have some lifter tick as well on my '92 750iL. I tried changing from 15W40 to 20W50 oil after using a (cringe)engine flush. For me it made no difference. I called the dealer. Service guy said that "With your kind of mileage (135,000 miles, you're probably just due for a valve job anyway." I ask how much...."It shouldn't be much more than $5000 (CDN)..." I say I think I'll be doing it myself. He says I won't save even half the cost. He recommended new lifters all around, etc. etc. which will bring the parts cost to more than half the total bill.

I think I'm going to try the flush thing one more time, and probably go to a synthetic oil for the winter and see what happens. Other than that, I'll be listening as the rockers and lifters continue to smack around and burn themselves out.

I have had the noise diagnosed as a sticking hydraulic lifter. Has anyone found and replaced one of these. The dealer quoted 36hours at 7 million dollars per hour (might as well have been)
Thanks
