Couple of things to check. First, make sure that the camshaft and the rocker arms are being oiled properly. The camshaft oiler bar is held on with two banjo bolts. Earlier versions of these bolts would work themselves loose and starve the camshaft of oil. The newer bolt design includes threadlock comound on the bolt threads. Secondly, check the valve clearances which should be 0.012 inch on a cold engine. After I replaced a cylinder head gasket, I failed to adjust the valves properly and the engine sounded like a diesel tractor. Once the valves were correctly adjusted, the engine purred like a kitten.

Both of these checks can easily be performed in a couple of hours and don't cost anything (apart from two new camshaft oiler bar banjo bolts). If either or both of these fix the problem, you will not have to worry about the more expensive solutions.

I have had the noise diagnosed as a sticking hydraulic lifter. Has anyone found and replaced one of these. The dealer quoted 36hours at 7 million dollars per hour (might as well have been)
Thanks
