The cap fix likely fixes the display, although there have been busted display's too (very few).

The e34 5er should have the exactly same speedo; least the e34 535i of an acquintance this summer was exacto-mundo like mine except that his got a few "DING!"s more :-)

Try the cap fix first before trying to change the display. Check all contacts and change all bulbs while you're in there.
