That is a lead plug that is used as a backup for safety pressure relief. When the pressure and temp is too high it melts and you'll have a hole. I remelted the lead and put the screw back, loaded three cans of 134a (Car was converted) and have been working ok for a year. Remember to apply vacuum before reloading.
The other day I was adding freon to my '89 735IL and it began to leak out of the top of the accumulator. The point that the freon was escaping was a small pin hole in the center of a 14mm bolt facing the front of the car. This bolt was attached to a square piece that sat on top of the accumulator. Why would a hole be in the center of this bolt? How can I find a new bolt with no pin hole or is it sapposed to be there?
