That's odd, it must have split one of the transmission fluid cooler lines at the same time. Both of the transmission cooler lines split on mine at the same time earlier this summer with no warning, while traveling at 75 mph. I notice smoke in the mirror & coasted to a stop & by the time I pulled to the side of the road, it had already pumped 6.5 quarts of ATF out of it & consequently had no gears. I hitched a ride to town & got enough hose & clamps & fluid & topped it off & drove to town without consequence. I then had new hydraulic hoses swaged to the existing metal lines & 2,000 miles later it runs fine as if nothing happened although it most likely accelerated the wear on the clutch plates by many thousands of miles. ATF had soaked the entire underside of the car from front to back.

Colin, I wish I could be of more help. The split line must be the LAD that Max referred to. When you say the "gearbox" is empty, do you mean the differential or transmission?
