Thanks to every one for sharing ideas and diagrams on the fuel pump question I posted last week. I got 2 new fuel pumps (from Zygmunt) and installed yesterday. So far everything seems to be working great. There were no obvious issues (clogged intake etc.) when I took the old pumps out. I did find a larger (than I would expect) pile of metal shavings in the area under the intake strainer. Some were steel and some were alumunim (magnet test). All were less than 1/32" long. I don't mean to make it sound like there was a "pile" of them... in all, what I cleaned out might have covered the end of an eraser on a pencil. Install was easy and took about 45 minutes.

The pumps came sealed in plastic with a light mineral like oil in the bag. I'm sure some of it was in the pumps when I installed them (was not sure if I should flush them first, but decided not to). I did notice that my exhaust smelled like that oil when I ran the car after the new install. I hope that there was nothing in that stuff that hurts the cats. Have to go for a smog check in a month so I guess I'll find out!

Kevin
