You'll need to get the door liner off - there should be details in the archives, from myself if no one else... Then, with the window full-up, get a torch and have a look at the TOP MIDDLE of the lock assembly. Notice the thin spring steel strip running across the top, with two square-ish lugs poking through it and slots in it running away from them.
The two lugs are part of the outside plate; push the spring steel strip along horizontally will release the lugs, and then the top of the plate will be free to remove from the outside of the door - the bottom is another set of lugs that hook in. Then put on your gasket (maybe some smear of black gasket silicone sealant if it won't stay put?) and hook the new plate bottom lugs in, push in plate, push across strip to lock it on, replace door liner... and you're done.
This does assume the theivery hasn't bent-up the steel lock-strip, but it shouldn't have...

I'm talking about the black metal trim around the cylinder
Can you claify what you mean by "bezel"? if it's just the top of the cylinder -the round bit - then you'll need a new tumbler, the same happened to my car before I bought it & the dealer supplied the tumbler, I coded it & fitted it...

Well I've just had my 740il 1994 for about a week, and someone tried to steel it. They broke the bezel covering the driver side cylinder and the gasket beneeth it. My question is will I be able to replace this myself. First 9/11 now this.
