Heater Valve Replacement - Whole Thing or Kit? (archive)

My heater control valves seem to be sticky - sometimes I get nothing but full blast heat even when I set the Temp dials to full cool. Other times the vents blow cool air, but do not respond to the control dials on the dash unless I turn the dials to full heat.

My question is - should I replace the entire heater control unit (the unit that the coolant hoses go to - not the dash microprocessor) or use the heater valve replacement kit that I've seen for sale.

I'm reasonably handy and could do either - just interested in spending as little time as possible on this. I need all the weekend time I can get to play with my 10 week old daughter.

Thanks in advance,
Troy
