Manual or automatic? Check the tag on the back of the differential cover to get the rear end ratio. Early e32 735i's had a 3.64 for the automatic & I think a 3.25(?) for the stick. Later models (91, 92) changed to a 4.27 for the automatic. They go for $400 to $500 used, should be a direct swap, at worst you'll have to swap the input flange if different driveshaft style. The auto has a .73:1 4th gear ratio. Mine turns 3300 rpm in 4th at 80 mph & runs fine at that speed all day.I'd do that first, & then go for a performance chip, J.C., Dinan, AutoThority, etc., $250. Even with these mod's it will still be slower than many cars off the line but once it gets up to 3600 rpm or so, you'll be pleased.

Hi I have a 1988 735i and Im tired of this slug! Is the tranny suppose to shift so fast? I know the car weighs over 3,000lbs but its so slow off the start. Im in 3 gear before I hit 40mph, but top end is fine. Is there anything I can do? what about chips? I was racing a 4cyl honda and we were doing 120mph that pretty fast, but he was right there. I felt that was a horrible. To close for comfort, please help!!!
