Personally I prefer to consider the non-surgical solutions to things like valve ticking before I open up a motor... in this case I would suggest the use of a lighter oil in the winter, use of a flush during the next oil change and perhaps the addition of a detergent such as Rislone that was suggested by Gale a few posts back. In the end it may be loose bolts... I just feel that jumping to that conclusion with so little information - especially when the noise seems to go away when the engine warms substantially, which could indicate the change in viscocity of some sludge or fluids, is a bit premature...
east coast is getting colder and with that comes a ticking from the top of the engine that only goes away after very long drive times. Sounds a bit like a diesel but a little more quite.
When should this become a concern. I plan to switch over to mobil 1 soon, maybe it will help.
