I had a leak that was hard to trace on my 750. Here are some spots to look for (oil can run along edges and such before it actually falls to the ground)

1) valve cover
2) bell housing
3) oil pan (not the plug, but the pan)

You might try cleaning around the bell housing and pan with a rag soaked with kero/gumout/enamel reducer, whatever your faovrite solvent is... to remove all the road dirt etc. so you can see where a leak might be coming from. On the 750 there is also a timing chain tensioner that has a cover that is notorious for leaking... it is on the front of the engine... not sure if the big 6 has that same set up or not. How much oil is coming out each day? If the car is running (engine in idle) and you watch under the car, can you see any oil dripping? Is there any oil spray on the underside of the car behind the motor (oil blowing back as the car is driven)?

I was wondering if anyone can help me solve an oil leak that is comming from a '89 735il.Whenever the car sit overnight, oil leaks from somewhere. When the car is on a lift at the shop, there is no oil trail comming from any where on the oil pan or from any place from the filter canister. But if I put a container under the car where the oil plug is,the next morning, theres oil in the container. This is driving me mad! I even put a new plug and gasket just to make sure that its not comming from there.Any advice would be helpful to me on what other areas that I can check to find the leak. Also, the car isnt using anymore oil that before.Thanks...
