I have 172k miles on an 88 750. Most of what I have read from others seems to suggest 250-300k miles. To achieve that, I believe it is imperative to service the beast well - regular oil and filter changes and also make sure it does not overheat. I also believe that the cooling system is designed so that the temp gauge should typically read about 12 o'clock. If the gauge goes to 3/4 or higher, that is too hot and if allowed to continue engine life will be shortened or head bolts will stretch and "major" repairs will be necessary. Also BMW's are the "ultimate driving machines" but I'm sure you can run one to a premature grave with continual hard driving. Just my opinion and I could be wrong.
