These cars are basically designed for a service life of approx. 12 years. Given the usual 15k mls vehicles of this category are driven per year it amounts to about 180k mls. This is also supported by the fact that early odometers (87 and 88) would stop counting after about 297k km. This was a software feature changed with later models.

Due to the quite different driving habits in the US I can only give a general picture for the country of origin.

Given the high manufacturing standards and with good maintenance 250k or 300k mls should be in reach. I know one 750i with over 500k mls, first engine, first transmission. Also the high maintenance costs forbid excessive mileage. For the price of a factory rebuilt transmission for an 88 750i you can buy a complete 90 model with lower mileage and better components.
