There was indeed never a BMW with a Wankel engine. At least not in production.

The Wankel engine was invented by Felix Wankel a German engineer, like Nikolaus Otto (this why we call gasoline engine Ottomotoren) and Rudolf Diesel.

Thereve been two production Wankel cars prior to Wankel: The NSU Wankel Spyder (1 disk) and the NSU Ro 80 (2 disks). NSU was the largest motorcycle manufacturer in the world inthe late 50s. Long before anybody had heard about Honda. NSU was later bought by Audi and Audi/NSU bought by Volkswagen.

BTW: I would call a gas turbine an internal combustion engine as well.
