PRESALES INSPECTION: A must with this car and have it done by an independant 3 third party. It should include a leakdown test and the idle test. Also pay close attention to suspension and cooling system as this is around the milage that they start to wear out. This is cheap insurance. You could spend an equal amount in asprin down the road if you don't have it done.
Maintenance Records : I would not buy a 7 series with out having a complete written maintenance history from the day it was delivered. This will tell you how much trouble the car gave previous owners. Some cars are just lemons from the get go.
I bought my 94 740il 18 months ago with 49,000 miles on it. I've put 22,000 miles on it since then. Maintenance cost to date. Inspection II service $1,000, New battery $150.00, Tail light bulb $5.00. All work perormed by an independant garage (would be cheaper and more reliable if performed by owner but I'm hndicapped at the moment from a broken arm that won't heal) All in all I love my BMW and feel the cost so far is far outweighed by the joy of driving it. Long trips are the cars forte which should sit well with you. Good luck.
I'm in love with a '94 740il with 89K on it. I can buy it for $14-$15K. I don't know at this point if the engine has been replaced. If it has, and it has the "good" block, am I O.K.?
I will use this car to earn my living, I'm a road rep, and drive 30K-35K a year. I Presently drive a '90 MB 300SE and it has been a very reliable car. (260K)
Would you all advise a '94 740il is a good car for my purpose? What kind of fuel mileage should I expect? How much in $ should I expect to spend a year on maintainance?
