There may also be a leak coming from the gasket located at the very bottom of the trans.(This is where your service technician removes and replaces the pan to service your trans.) If you can, take a look at the exhaust system underneath your car. Is there a build-up of dark fluid on the flanges where the catalytic converters meet the rear mufflers. If so, it is most likely a trans leak, but it may still be dificult to determine the origin of the leak.
Good luck.

Have you added any recently? Aslo check the trans. cooling lines which run from the transmission to the radiator. You could have a leak or loose fitting there.

there is smoke coming from the engine compartment and i safely assume an oil leak is dripping onto the hot exhaust. i checked under the hood and the smoke seems to be at the back of the engine near the firewall.

Can someone please tell me wht to expect in terms of cost in a worst case scenario. I am not a techhie at all and have no idea what to expect, just doing my research before heading to the shop.

TIA
