I had smoke coming from my engine compartment for a long time and I would also have to add oil all the time too. The problem kept on getting worse as time went on. I took it to the BMW dealer and they said it was the rear main seal. They were wrong. It turned out to be the head gasket. They even had the nerve to tell me to just get rid of the car instead of fixing the problem because it was too much trouble. A piece of the gasket broke between the 5th and 6th cylinder. I replaced the head gasket and it solved the problem. I was so happy to have that problem solved,
