This electric aux. pump has some more features or reason why they put it in. Regardsless of engine/water pump speed this provides a more or less uniform water flow through the heating/AC system. The control system would go nuts if the water volume would vary between e.g. 1 gallon per minute to 40 at full speed. Don't know how much the belt driven pump is delivering. Also in the warm-up period when the thermostat is more or less completely closed you still have water circualtion through the engine. Also on newer cars (E38 and a lot of Mercedes cars) you can use this pump together with the fan to make use of the hot engine and radiator. This way you can heat the car for some time without idling the engine, which is illegal in Germany for longer periods. Ekkehart
