I have a '92 535i 5 spd, and an'89 735il auto. The main difference is size and weight. The 735il ("l" is a longer version) is a great highway cruiser, fast & smooth. The 535i is faster and handles more like a sports car. The 735il is not avilable in a stick trans, the 735i was available (but rare) w/ stick. The 535i is easier to find with a stick but still rare.

The 530, 540 cars in the first couple years were built with a nikasil block that deteriorated form exposure to sulfered gas (read US). Check out the link below for more model info.
