I will put tracer in the oil and check with a black light to be sure. I know it is landing on the muffler so its likely dead centre which is why I thought it might be the rear main. The car goes in Thursday, I will let you know.

It's more likely that your pan gasket(s) are the source of your oil leak. This is common on 750's of your car's age. You should be able to have other the upper and lower gasket done for about $225.

I bought my 91 750il in Texas in February of this year. The car had 88,000 miles on it and seemed near perfect. I had a check control problem from day one which required two months of messing around and a new circuit board. I fixed a small crack in the dash and replaced the headliner which came down in the summer.

The transmission shifted a little stiff when it was cold so I did an oil change using synthetic oil. The transmission now shifts like new.

The car had gone less than 8,000 miles since 95. and I have put 14,000 miles on it in 8 months.

It developed an oil leak a few months ago and now smells and smokes after a long drive as oil is dripping on the muffler from what I assume is the rear main seal. Back to the shop next week.

Other than this I have had one bank of wires and plugs replaced as I had a short in #6 plug from a mechanic that pulled on a wire and not the boot, at my expense.

Even with all these minor aggrevations I have had a ball with the car this year. It is after all a 10 year old car and most believe it to be a new car due to its timeless lines.

I know this is not the car for everyone, but for me I would not trade it for anything. It goes away at the end of the month for its winter rest and I hope to have a new set of tires and rims for it when the spring rolls around.

I also own a 525i which has been my main car for the past 6 years and has been one of the best cars I have ever owned.

With 300,000 klms it has now been demoted to my winter car. It still looks and drives great but is started to show its age.

The purpose of this post is that of a counter point to some of the negative comments I have seen on these particular vehicles. They are well engineered but not flawless. But most of all fun to drive.
To see the car at the URL look for Rods 750iL

Cheers
Rod
