The 'air volume control" is the "y" tube that everyone incorrectly calls a PCV valve. The 'air return control' is the check valve that is inserted into the air boot. The 'air return control' prevents air from being sucked into the crankcase, via the air boot, during periods of high crankcase vacuum (i.e. idle). However the valve allows blowby gases to be recycled through the intake plumbing (i.e. full throttle).

This is supposed to cure most oil leaks since it fixes the cam area ventilation.

A rather cheap and DIY kind of fix also

BMW doesn't call these "PCV" valves but there are two types, one called a "air volume control) valve and another called a "air return control".

Which one is equivalent to the PCV valve, or do they both (pairs) need to be replaced?

Thanks,

Mark
