89 750 water pump/AC trouble (archive)

My AC has been weak and I figured it was either low freon or a failing compressor.

Then it threw the water pump/AC belt (it caught on fire, smoke got inside the car as I was pulling it over...can you say, "FIRE in the cabin!!!").

I am 95% sure the water pump is bad because it has a very rough spot in it when I turn it by hand, and there is one shiny spot on the pulley where it seems the pump siezed up and the belt polished that one side before it ignited. The compressor turns easily (both the pump and disengaged clutch).

I am going to replace the water pump. Would anyone speculate that my poor AC performance was due to belt slippage not giving full power transfer to the AC compressor?

Any thoughts or input to this repair would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
norm
