In Reply to: 1993 740il or 1992 735il. Which would you choose? posted by Tom on October 28, 2001 at 16:13:16:

I own a 1990 735iL and have driven e32 740iL's. I believe that the only real difference in the two cars is the engine/transmission. Expect to experience about the same suspension, HVAC, and electrial gremlins with either model.

When you wind them up the V8 has a lot more power and is smoother than the big six but when you're just driving normally around town the difference really isn't that noticeable.

As far as I can tell from the posts on this board, both cars have their share of rough idle problems and transmission trouble. I would bet that the 4 speed auto in the 735 is cheaper to replace than the non-serviceable 5 speed auto in the 740. The six is probably easier to work on than the V8, but it requires more maintance - periodic valve adjustments, for example.

I almost bought a 740iL before I bought my 735. A big difference in purchase price was the major factor in my decision. If you have found similar examples of each, in similar condition and for about the same money, I'd go for the 740.
