Many things can bring on the trans program error. I recall a post about 6 months ago with a 740, that the owner took his car into the dealer many times, with the same problem when coasting downhill. The dealer was anxious to replace the tranny. They replaced the common items i.e. speed sensor, etc. Still no solution. They finally contacted a ZF specialist who traced it back to a $10 vent valve -- problem solved. Not saying that's your case, but it might at least be worth the $ to have the dealer read out the code(s) & take it from there.gale
I just bought a 1994 740i with 140,000 miles on it to replace my '97 Explorer with transmission problems. Today, not 60 miles into my ownership of the car, I was coasting down a long mountain road. The check engine light began to flicker, then became solid, then the car had a hard downshift and the transmission program message came on. At the bottom of the hill, the check engine light went out and when I turned off the car and started it up again, the trans program message went away and hasn't come on since. The car runs and drives fine otherwise. Have I traded in one bad transmission vehicle for another? I would appreciate any opinions.
Jim
