Thanks Rich, I will replace both belts and see if it goes. Could that also be related to chain tensioner? How can I check it?

Now to be serious, are the belts OK, that seems to be a common theme among your suspects - aside from transmission. See if the belts are tight and in OK shape.

Last summer my 91 750iL has developed a strange sound right after engine start: it is a rather loud whine, which lasts for 0.5-2sec, is random, but more frequent when the engine is warm. Does not appear to be starter related, as sometimes it begins while starter is still turning. So far just sound but it is getting persistent. My suspects: fan clutch, power st. pump, AC compressor, water pump, transmission (?).Maybe someone on the board had similar experiences? I would appreciate any input.
