I was today thumbing through the e32 Bentley manual and came upon the procedure for removing the exhaust manifolds on the various engines.
For the 735i: Reach in, unbolt and remove manifolds (30 minutes flat)
For the 740i: It is recommended to REMOVE THE ENGINE before removing manifolds due to extremely crowed engine compartment.
THAT IS A QUOTE, by the way!!
The other engines are fine engines, but God forbid you (or your mechanic at $60/hr) needs to work in there. If you are buying a NEW car and plan to sell it by 100K, then any engine is fine, BUT if you are buying a well used car (100-150K) then I like the idea of buying a reliable car that iis easy to work on (since at 100-150K you will be approaching the point where you might be looking at maintenance in your future).
BTW, I get 25mpg around town (suburban) and 26mpg at 70+mpg highway (28mpg if I drive 60 or so).
I run an automotive shop (lots of BMWs and MB)and am a licensed aircraft mechanic/maintenance inspector. I personally will NEVER chose to own a "V" engined car until I cannot avoid it. Just because I CAN do the work doesn't mean I WANT to do it (on my own car).
