Usually those types of noises are related to the bendix on the starter motor not disengaging after the motor catches. The noise can be rather pronounced and may be a function of the viscosity of the lubricant related to the bendix.

Last summer my 91 750iL has developed a strange sound right after engine start: it is a rather loud whine, which lasts for 0.5-2sec, is random, but more frequent when the engine is warm. Does not appear to be starter related, as sometimes it begins while starter is still turning. So far just sound but it is getting persistent. My suspects: fan clutch, power st. pump, AC compressor, water pump, transmission (?).Maybe someone on the board had similar experiences? I would appreciate any input.
