Several people have posted some excellent procedures for replacing the MOSFET's on the heater final stage unit (SWORD). I just had the opportunity to perform one of these operations and used a procedure posted by JARLE on Dec. 01, 2000, which was a response to a posting by Jyrki, also on Dec. 01, 2000. For those of you who want to try this, the procedure is quite good. However, here are a couple of updates that will make things a bit easier for you. The procedure mentions cutting the MOSFET's from the wave plate with a hacksaw blade, and grinding the epoxy on the top to expose the solder connections to the PCB. Rather than grinding and cutting, I used a heat gun to warm the epoxy (or whatever it is) and found that it lifted off very easily, leaving a clean board. When removing the MOSFET's from the wave plate, after drilling the rivets, I applied the heat gun to the wave plate and again the epoxy softened and lifted off easily. Upon re-assembly, I used 6-32 machine screws rather than 8-32, as mentioned in the procedure. The procedure is great, and everything worked well. Thanks to all who contributed to it. I hope this little addition helps those who use it in the future.
