93 740i Engine Query (archive)

I've just purchased (but not yet received) a 93 740i. I had not happened on these message boards and had somehow heard nothing about the engine problems. I won't know for another two weeks if this is a replaced engine or not. You can bet that the first thing I do after shaking hands is sliding under the car to check the engine number.

The car has 140,000 miles on it. The body and interior seem to be in mint condition. We have the service records for the past three years and the current owners seem very obsessive.

Query: Assuming the worst and it is the original engine, if the oil has been changed regularly and the engine otherwise properly maintained all these years ... do I have a chance that things will work out for me as long as I do the same?
