The problem with the V8 can not be negated with proper maintanence. The problem lies with the amount of sulfar in the fuel used in the vehicle. Sulfar content varies from state to state and by brand name. If the car was not subject to a fuel with high sulfar content the premature wear did not accure. If the vehicle is relocated to an area with high sulfar content in the fuel the problem will then manifest itself. In my opinion BMW dropped the ball on this one and should have replaced all the alumasil blocks in the U.S. Just because the car was placed in service in an area with low sulfar fuel and stayed there for the period of the extended BMW warranty should not negate their liability if the car is then relocated to an area with the high sulfar fuel and the engine then begins to wear prematurely. I wish you luck with your new ride. It will put miles of smiles on your face. Let's just hope that BMW will stand behind it's product should our nightmare become a reality. I have the same concerns as I have the original block but so far no problems (keeping my fingers crossed).

I've just purchased (but not yet received) a 93 740i. I had not happened on these message boards and had somehow heard nothing about the engine problems. I won't know for another two weeks if this is a replaced engine or not. You can bet that the first thing I do after shaking hands is sliding under the car to check the engine number.

The car has 140,000 miles on it. The body and interior seem to be in mint condition. We have the service records for the past three years and the current owners seem very obsessive.

Query: Assuming the worst and it is the original engine, if the oil has been changed regularly and the engine otherwise properly maintained all these years ... do I have a chance that things will work out for me as long as I do the same?

Thanks!
