Have you tried talking to a Bosch agent to see if they can help with a reconditon / repair? I'd bet the regulator is proabably used in other Bosch units, and short of the windings being "toast" they might be able to do a core part swap on the regulator/bushings set...

As per posting lower down, I have had the ABS, hand-brake and battery lights on dashboard constantly staying on! It seems to have occured after driving during a severe rain storm. According to the BMW repair shop the alternator has shit itself (as I expected). A new one is only $600! The problem is that there are none in Australia. It takes 4 weeks to get stuff from Germany. I will have to get a used one from the wreckers as reconditioning costs some three times as much as a used alternator.
Hopefully one day I will be able to drive the car for more than 2 weeks without something else f***ing up!
