Bridge,
Only thing that doesn't add up is if the oil pan
gasket was changed 25K ago, the bolts should be
tight. The bolts lose their torque because the
gasket age hardens due to repeated thermocycling
over time and the gasket becomes compacted...this
shouldn't happen in 25K miles. The bolts working
loose over time is a common issue. I just replaced the oil pump and gasket in my 7. As
Ladislav said, best technique is drop the crossmember..not a fun job if your car is a daily
driver. Before you go to the trouble of changing the gasket, torque the bolts to spec. check Bentley for the value..it is a range...pretty
low torque value...its an aluminum pan..good thing
its big.
Best Regards,
George

I went to change my oil today, and noticed a massive leak at the front of the oil pan. It turns out that the bolts were not even hand tight. I tightened all the ones I could reach (one is stripped). Anyone have a similar experience? Will this fix the leak? Is this normal? I understand the engine has to be removed in order to change the pan gaskets, which I obviously would really like to avoid. Also, it looks as though the previous owner had the gaskets changed about 25K miles ago.
