I've got the same problem. I replaced the gas trunk lifters with ones that are the correct size, but I am guessing that they are too strong. Actually I only put one on because it lifted so fast. That's been a year ago and I had always parked in the garage. So it hadn't dawned on me before your post that I could adjust the mechanism. Thank you for your post.
