I've heard of others doing this successfully as
well...I tried that first..couldn't get the motor
up high enough in my '90 735il to clear the oil pump with the baffle in the deep part of the pan.
I dropped the front crossmember..I was replacing
the entire front suspension anyway. You must
have had fun finessing that long pan around the
crossmember and oil pump pick up without wiping
the holimar gasket dressing all over the bottom
of the motor..hats off.

I just changed the oilpan gaskets myself.
If you losen the enginemounts and lift the engine up as high as it will go (the firewall is the limmit) you will be able to change the gaskets.
It is not easy but I did it this way.
Before i did this my 735 leaked a lot, now it is completly dry.
