You can try what Bjorn did..believe Rainman has
done this successfully on other Bimmers. I tried
before I dropped the crossmember. No removing the trans would make it too big a job...certainly more time than dropping the crossmember. What I recommend is get under there and loosen the rear trans mounts and be sure to loosen the exhaust bracket that connects in the same place. Then what you do is disconnect the engine mounts and the motor/trans package will fulcrum at the loosened rear trans mounts..at least that's the theory..I couldn't raise my motor high enough...and I disconnected just about everything..for example check the
ground strap on the pass side eng. mount connection and the power steering pump hose to
the reservoir..I would also loosen the air conditioning hose tie down to the pass side frame
rail to help get the motor up.

Does the trans have to be removed too?
I just changed the oilpan gaskets myself.
If you losen the enginemounts and lift the engine up as high as it will go (the firewall is the limmit) you will be able to change the gaskets.
It is not easy but I did it this way.
Before i did this my 735 leaked a lot, now it is completly dry.
