Mike,

I have E39 wheels on my E32. Got them for a bargain that I could not pass up. The offset is not enough for the front to clear the strut towers. You can run them with tires up to 215/55X16 without spacers. I went with 225/55X16 and 1/4" spacers. Also had to use longer lug bolts. Wider tires rub the strut tower on the side, taller tires rub the bottom of the strut spring holder.

Hubcentric spacers are expensive. I went with generic spacers (one size fits all) from a local wheel house and glued them to the hubs with axle grease, centering by finger tip feel all around. Butt-o-meter says balance is good with no vibration. Will keep a close eye on tire wear.

If my daughter gets back from joy riding before dark, will post a photo.
