escaping freon (archive)

while driving on a hot summer day in L.A I noticed, what I can only assume was freon, escaping like a puff of smoke from the front right of the hood, followed by warm air out of the vents. Does this sound like a classic problem with this car (88 735iL)? where do I begin to fix?
