I agree, classic problem on any car. However, it is not necessarily the relief plug. It could simply be a failed rubber refrigerant hose. Basically, look for the mineral oil that was left behind at the leak point. With catastropic leaks, a lot of oil comes out with the refrigerant. Leave the car R-12 compliant and use RB-276 to refill, you will be much happier than with R134a. Otherwise put R-12 back in.
It is a classic problem for any car on which the aux fan does not work and the freon is extremly hot when it gets to the reciever and blows a satfy plug that is installed there when this blows that is when you see the puff of white escaping freon and condesing the moisture in the air, hence the white, this may be a good time to convert to a R134 sytem make sure Aux fan is working before you do any of this, your reciever will hac=ve to be replaced anyway and you can buy a new saftey plug. Email me direct if you need any further help.
