Another possibility is that the fan will work at high speed and there is no response by tuning the central dial of the HVAC. It will also work at a the higest speed at maximum setting.

'88 735i NZ (without microfilter)

Having recently found this wealth of knowledge on the e32, I have started to rebuild the car that a mechanic suggested I should donate for the tax write off(yeh right). Thank you all. Using Gale's instructions I decide to remove the sword and change the microfilter. Everything was going smoothly, and the sword came out easily, but then I discovered there is no microfilter or cover. Could it be that someone removed it and just didn't bother to replace? Also my sword was attached with regular philips head screws, evidence that someone has been thre before. Please help I've had this 88 735iL car for seven years, and have 180k miles on it,and I want to give it a new lease on life.

thereis no microfilter on 1988, microfilters did not show up on E32 until 1990

Thanks Tony .Do you know how to tell if the sword is defective?
