No, the bottom of the tank was as clean as the preverbial whistle. Even the mesh filter on the bottom of the old pump was clear. Yes, do the job with the tank empty or you will be up to your elbows, literally, in gasoline. Unfortunately, the gas tank was almost full when I did the job. Gasoline definitely irritates the skin so take appropriate precautions.

Good job! Thanks. Was there any water or much debris in the bottom of the tank? I would assume if planning the job in advance, it would be best to do it with a near empty tank.
