the physical fit of motor itself (mounts, transmission compatibility, etc.) may not be that much of a problem, but the engine management electronics, wiring harnesses and the like are most likely going to be.

disclaimer: i am not intimately familiar with the pre '88 7 series. all i am applying is some common sense.
