Transmission Problem (archive)

At various, but differing times and situations, the transmission of my 88 735i races first, then jumps into 3rd gear. It is then in the M transmission mode. Often this happens first thing in the morning, but not always. Sometimes, I can be 100 miles into a highway trip and then it happens. If I pull over and shut off the car, and wait for a minute, when I start up again, I may be good for the next three days (or the next three minutes). At the tranny shop, they feel that it is the result of a faulty sensor, but they can't find the problem. They did a fairly complete overhaul on the transmission, but the problem continued. The dealer replaced the S, E, M switch, but that didn't help. Anybody out there got any suggestions? Help!
