The switchblade remote is I/R (infrared) and was used from 89-9/91. 10/91-94 ( e32's) used a 3 button RF (radio frequency) keyfob remote. If you have a small black "nub" button next to your sunroof switch that appears to have no function...you have the I/R system installed in your vehicle and purchasing the switchblade remote will give you keyless entry ability.

Below is a link to a pic of the switchblade remote and the part #'s you need to order it. If you need the RF system and remote...BMW sells it as an accessory through the parts department.
