As It operates as a resistor coil, Dirt often gets in and fouls it, Causing it to short out. Mine did the same Recently, Imagine the Shock going along the Motorway and the Instrument Illumination DIES on you, leaving you with no visible Instruments, Turned out it was the Dimmer Switch Needing Cleaned. Opened it and Sprayed Liberally with Contact Cleaner, and Regreased. Now Works Smoooooothly.

88 735i I made a cross conection because I tried to change a bulb in the dush. Now the control ilumination is not working. I checked the fuses and they are o.k. The gauges are still working. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
