Does it make a crackling noise when changing the volume level? If so, it sounds like all it needs is some contact cleaner. It's best to slide the radio out to do this, as the rheostat is inside the metal case. I would recommend disconnecting the battery prior (have radio code handy). You can get contact cleaner from Radio Shack, etc. It can be sprayed down the volume control shaft with the knob pulled off, but be careful since it can discolor the black plastic. You can do a more thorough job by opening the metal case & spray directly into the rheostat, then rotate the knob rapidly a few dozen times full travel.

The factory installed radio on my 1988 735i has problems with the volume control. At low volumes only the front right speaker operates properly. At higher volumes the left speaker is selective as to whether or not it will work. Has anyone previously encountered a similar problem of have any suggestions for the repair of it?

Thanks,
Espo
