For this job, ramps would be better than jack stands as these will raise the car higher. I tend to use ramps more often than jack stands nowadays. Ramps are easier to use, quicker, and can be used to raise the front or the rear. The only time ramps will not work is if you have to remove a wheel.

Well, I don't have access to either of these things, but I hope putting it on jack stands will give me enough room.

make sure you get it as high as possible, so that you have enough room to manoeuver when dropping the exhaust. a pit (or a lift) is a nice thing....
