I have an 89 735iL with the same problem. I took my radio to a technician because of cassette stopped changing tracks. the problem was the rubber belts were worn and had to be replaced. He looked into the problem with the radio output to speakers and found the contacts on the volume control potentiometer were worn. Cleaning helps for a short time but then the problem comes back. The permanent fix is to replace the potentiometer which mainly consist of labor and ordering the right part. I plan to get mind fixed after 1st of jan 2002.
The factory installed radio on my 1988 735i has problems with the volume control. At low volumes only the front right speaker operates properly. At higher volumes the left speaker is selective as to whether or not it will work. Has anyone previously encountered a similar problem of have any suggestions for the repair of it?

Thanks,
Espo
